Version 1.1 of GutClean as distributed by me (William Boyd living in Penygroes UK and writing 19 June 2008) is free of viruses and other malware.
However I naturally cannot guarantee the same for versions appearing in other languages written by other people and you should exercise common sense and a degree of caution when downloading and running these.
It's important that you understand that anti-virus software won't protect you against malicious code actually written into the program. Anti-virus software indeed protects you against viruses but cannot, so to speak, protect you against the whole disease itself. Right now GutClean could be sniffing out your credit card number, your taste in pornography and your Facebook entries to mention only the three most important things (although perhaps not necessarily mutually exclusive of each other) and your anti-virus protection will be entirely unaware of it.
Having a properly installed firewall on your internet connection ought in theory to protect you against any of that stuff getting out, but all the same GutClean could be creating havoc with your files and doing all sorts of terrible things to your computer in general including, incidentally, interfering with your firewall settings themselves and hacking out a portal to the world for itself.
One sensible thing you can do is search the web for reports of malware. Thus with GutClean you could perhaps search on 'GutClean virus malware'. This might well bring up my site www.GutClean.com (because it has a page similar to this) but it certainly shouldn't bring up any pages warning that it's malicious (although of course the warning page itself might be malicious).
Another thing you would be well to do is to locate the original web page offering the language version you want to download. Does it look in the first place as a site where you might expect a version of GutClean to appear? Does it discuss measures taken to protect you against malware and indeed your privacy (because when you download the program the site will know where to find you again if it chooses to keep that information about you)?
Finally I caution you that it would also be possible to distribute a copy of GutClean claiming to be the original version but actually modified to include malware. I've included PGP signatures in the original distribution to guard against this but to be frank I've provided them mostly to protect me against malicious claims and don't expect that many users will check them. Again you should exercise common sense and a degree of caution when downloading your copy of GutClean.
